The month of Ramadwaan has come. But exactly what is this month about?

What is Ramadwaan ?

It is the 9th month of the islamic lunar calendar.

When does the month starts and ends ?

It starts when the moon is sighted and ends when the month is sighted

If after 30 days not sighted, next month automatically begins

Why does that month falls on a different date each year ?

well because you are taking the solar year as reference. It’s simply because a lunar year is different from a solar year.

What is the status of the lunar and solar years in islam ?

The lunar year is used for humans, for administration purposes (you get your paycheck earlier).

The solar year is used for crops etc.

What do muslims do during the month of Ramadwaan?

They fast

What does fasting mean ?

It means not to eat, drink and have sexual relationship from dawn to sunset.

What does dawn means ?

It does not mean sunrise. It means the time before sunrise when a whitish light which spreads horizontally appears on the eastern horizon

So, muslims break fast at sunset ?

Yes, sunset means when the last tip of the sun has disappeared behind the horizon. Even though it may not be completely dark

What is this sehri / suhoor about ?

It is that meal you take during the last part of the night just before dawn. You eat enough to get energy for the day

What is iftwaar about ?

 It means breaking the fast.

Each one eats that which he is used to. But dates and water are always present.

What do muslims eat at Iftwaar times in Mauritius ( where i live ) ?

We are mostly of Indian origin and so we eat some Indo-Pak related foods

samosa, cutlasse among others (too exhausive list) gâteaux piment badja chanapuri etc etc

What is the daily routine ?

Well as there are no breakfast and lunch, more time is spent in devotional practices including recitation of the qur aan.

Can muslims fast every day of the year ?

No, it has been prohibited

Out of the month of Ramadwaan when do muslims fast ?

The prophet used to fast on mondays and thursdays and on the 13, 14 and 15 of each lunar month.

What happens after Ramadwaan ?

The first day of the month of Shawwaal ( the month after Ramadwaan ) is the day of Eid ( festival )
